As we now know Harry Truman the son of John & Martha Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri they moved from place to place but stayed on the western side of Missouri most of their life. They moved to Harrisonville, MO. then off to Belton, MO. for just a short period then to Grandview with his grandparents to the farm. Harry was 6 when they all moved to Independence where he can attend the Presbyterian church then attended Independence public school system at eight then later graduated from there in 1901. He also went on to college but after a year he dropped out.
From 1901 to 1906 he worked at Kansas city star, then as a timekeeper for the construction crew at the Santa fa railway. Working on the railway crews he had to sleep in the workman camps on the sides of the railway system. He then worked at the National bank of commerce in Kansas city alongside his brother Vivian before he moved back to the farm in Grandview and worked there from 1906 to 1917. He didn't know much about farming but he understood hard work and was willing to learn. John his father passed away in 1914 so Harry was responsible for the 600-acre farm now. Also during this time period, he wrote letters to the love of his life, Bess Wallace that he hoped to be his wife one day and served in the National Guard.
Truman enlisted into the National Guard in 1905 and then served until 1911 in the Kansas City Battery B. In 1917 when World War 1 broke out he rejoined Battery B and helped recruit new soldiers for Battery B. and then trained at Camp Doniphan in Oklahoma. After training, he then went to France to join a massive assault barrage on September 26, 1918, which lasted until November 11, 1918. He didn't lose a single life under his command during this long assault and for the appreciation from his men, they awarded him a loving cup, yes a cup. Loving Cups are given like a trophy and usually made out of silver.
War ended in 1918 so Truman went back home to Independence, MO. where he and Bess reunited and married. He then opened a men's clothing store with one of his buddies from service but did not make it during the recession. The recession was hard for many Americans, Truman was one of those men that risk it all. He also had a mine and some real estate that didn't make it during the hard times.
